Roofing The Importance of Roof Flashing

The Importance of Roof Flashing

April 12, 2020 by Jesse Curry

Professional roofing contractors understand the importance of roof flashing, but not all homeowners or building managers share that knowledge. Flashings are perhaps just as important as shingles. Here is a discussion to help you better understand what they are and what role they play.

What Are Roof Flashings?

Flashing is a piece of material installed in some areas of the roof to protect that area from water and to prevent the development of leaks. It’s typically a strip of aluminum, but it can also be another material such as steel, rubber, lead, and sometimes a liquid material that dries and adheres to the area around it.

Some of the areas where you might find flashings include roof penetrations, such as chimneys and skylights. Flashing is also found where a flat roof intersects with shingles, and where your roof meets your walls.

Your contractor will inspect your flashings during a roof repair to make sure they are still sturdy enough. Some flashings are not visible, so it’s important to let a professional do the inspection.

Why Are Flashings Important?

Flashings complete your roof’s waterproofing capabilities, so it’s just as important as the shingles or any other part of the roof. Without flashing, the area around, say, your chimney will have no protection from rain and ice. Water will penetrate the area around your roof where it meets the wall.

Temperature changes cause expansion and contraction of the different components of your home. The primary role of flashings is to let your walls and your roof to expand and contract without cracking or leaking. You can say that flashings give your home that extra waterproofing.

As one of the most trusted roof companies in the area, Roofing By Curry knows all about the importance of flashing. We can help you choose the right flashing material for your roof. Call us today at (941) 921-9111. We’re ready to serve in Sarasota.
