In this two-part blog series, Roofing by Curry discusses the first two decisions many homeowners will make during a roof replacement project. In this first part, we talk about the basic roofing types you can choose from, their advantages and limitations, and what the general consensus is.
Ask any roofing contractors in your local area, and they will tell you that asphalt shingles are the number one choice of homeowners nationwide. More than 50% of American homes make use of asphalt shingles to protect their roofs, and there’s actually a pretty good reason why.
Shingles can come in a wide variety of colors, which makes them fit any home style. Their durability, versatility and affordability are only three characteristics that make this roofing material a popular choice. On average, shingles can last about 20 years. While other types of materials can last longer, shingles are typically available with a limited 50-year warranty depending on the manufacturer and your contractor.
Tile and Slate Roofing
Slate, by far, is one of the more premium roofing products available today. Many roof companies recommend slate if you want to enhance your home’s aesthetic. Strength-wise, slate is relatively durable, lasting easily for about 100 years with minimal fading. It owes this longevity partly from its invulnerability to rot and its resistance to most naturally occurring damage.
Ceramic tiles, or simply tiles, definitely stand out compared to other roofing types. Tiles can last upwards of 50 years. They are also fireproof and resistant to fading. Their main drawback is its susceptibility to changes in the weather. Seasonal variations in temperature and humidity accelerate wear and tear on ceramic tiles, and wind speeds of 100 mile per hour and higher typically cause damage as well.
Metal roofing is the surprising wildcard in this roster. Gaining popularity relatively later than the other roofing materials, metal roofs possess high durability and are low maintenance. All these coupled with its lightweight and environmentally friendly traits make metal roofing a viable contender in the roofing market.
