Problems You Face When Nailing a New Roof Over the Old One

December 20, 2019 by Jesse Curry

In home improvement and renovation, going cheap is often the cause of problems. The same is true with roof replacement projects. There is no shortcut when it comes to a successful roofing installation. You cannot rely on substandard materials and service of unqualified roofers because at the end of the day, you’re the one who’s at risk.

The roofing system is your primary defense against the elements. Therefore, it is never advisable to install a new roofing system over the old one. Roofing by Curry, one of the most trusted local roofers, shares are some of the reasons why it is isn’t a good idea.

1. It May Violate Manufacturer Instructions

Two layers of shingles is the limit. However, damaged shingles cannot be layered with another one. When the shingles are already brittle, curled, or granulated, they should be replaced immediately and not layered with a new one. One, because it can damage other parts of the roof. Two, it violates the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. It Voids the Material Warranties

There’s a reason why roofers are against the practice of covering old roofing materials with new ones: they don’t want to void the warranty for the materials they will install. Before installing new materials, roofing contractors are required to inspect the condition of the whole roofing system. And when they find damage that can affect the new materials, they are obligated to remove and replace it.

3. It Adds More Weight to the Roof

The more materials installed, the heavier the roof gets. And that is not good for your roofing system. Over time, the extra weight can badly damage the materials inside due to pressure. Multiple layers of shingles can also absorb more heat than those installed directly in the sheathing.
