Roofing Low- & Steep-Sloped Roofing: Differences & Benefits

Low- & Steep-Sloped Roofing: Differences & Benefits

October 29, 2015 by Jesse Curry

According to the National Roofing Contractors Association, there are two types of roof systems: low and steep slopes. Low slopes have a pitch less than or equal to 3:12; anything higher than 3:12 is considered as a steep slope.

Steep-Slope Roofs

Roofers in Sarasota mostly install steep-sloped roofing materials on residential properties. This kind of system has three main components:

  • Roof deck – This is the main structure in roofs with steep slopes. Wood is the most typical material used for roof decks.
  • Underlayment – This serves as a secondary weatherproofing barrier for the system.
  • Roof covering – This sheds water and is the main protection against weather conditions.

There are different materials used for steep-sloped roofing. Roofing by Curry offers three of the most popular choices on the market today, which are:

  • Asphalt shingles – This is the most affordable option among other roofing materials. It is made of either organic paper fiber mat or fiberglass. It is available in a an array of colors and styles, which makes it perfect for any architectural style. As a Master Elite™ contractor, we offer ENERGY STAR–certified shingles from GAF.
  • Clay and concrete tile – Tile roofing dates back for hundreds of years and is still a popular material today. Both clay and concrete tiles are durable, fire-resistant, and long lasting.
  • Metal – Metal roofs can last up to 50 years or more. This material stands strong against any weather condition and helps in overall energy efficiency.

Low-Sloped Roofs

If your roofing has a pitch lower than 3:12, you will need lighter materials. Contractors install low-sloped roofing in commercial buildings, although you can also see it on some residential homes. Like steep slopes, low-sloped roofs have three main components:

  • Weatherproofing layer(s) – This is the most important component in this type of roofing system.
  • Reinforcement – This layer adds strength and puncture resistance. It also provides dimensional stability.
  • Surfacing – This provides protections against different elements. Some surfacing materials offer added benefits, such as hail and fire resistance and solar reflectivity.

There are several types of materials used for low slopes. Some of the most popular choices are:

  • Built-up – This is most ideal choice if you want to waterproof your property. Made of alternating layers of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics, this type of roofing can last up to 15 to 20 years.
  • Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) – This energy-efficient material provide protection against elements for up to 12 years. It can also resist fire and harmful ultraviolet rays.

Roofing by Curry, one of the trusted roofers in Sarasota, FL, also offers Polyglass®, a type of modified bitumen material. This material offers energy efficiency, curb appeal, and durability for your home.

Whichever roof slope you have, you can be sure that Roofing by Curry can handle it. We offer complete roof replacement, repair, and re-roofing in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
