Roofing How Humidity Affects Your Roofing System

How Humidity Affects Your Roofing System

December 3, 2019 by Jesse Curry

The amount of moisture in the air greatly affects the longevity of your roofing system. You may not notice it, but humidity is contributing to the deterioration of roofing materials over time.

For example, a minimal indoor humidity will keep your attic free from moisture buildup, leading to longer lifespan of attic insulation materials. On the other hand, too much moisture and water leaks can cause premature deterioration and bigger roof repair expenses. Therefore, you should be aware of the adverse effects of humidity to your roofing system so that you can prevent them and stop problems from aggravating.

Roofing by Curry of Florida shares three of the most common ways humidity can affect your roof.

1.Thick Fog and Cloudy Weather

Damp weather is bad for your roofing system because the moisture can buildup at the edges of the materials, leading to water damage. Molds, dirt, mud, and other debris can easily accumulate when the roof is constantly damp. To avoid this, always check your roof for signs of water damage and accumulation of dirt. Getting help from roofing contractors is also recommended.

2. Moisture Inside the Home

Don’t blast too much cool air to your attic. Sometimes, the humidity problem comes from within due to your unregulated Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning  (HVAC) system. When the air conditioner is supplying too much moisture in the attic, the insulation foams can absorb it, which can lead to buildup of molds and fungi. And the wood materials can also suffer due to rotting, which can compromise the entire structure.
