Did Your Roofing Contractor Install Your Shingles Correctly?

December 15, 2020 by Jesse Curry

When installed properly by professional roofing companies, most types of asphalt shingle roofing can last up to 30 years or more. The performance during this roof’s lifespan depends greatly on the quality of the installation. This is the biggest reason why it’s important to choose the right roofing contractor.

Roofing Contractor

Unfortunately, it can be hard for homeowners to know whether they’ve chosen a good contractor or not. Here are some tells.

Eaves and Rakes

One way to instantly tell if your roofing contractors know what they’re doing is in how they handle the rake roof deck and the eaves. Check to see if they are using proper starter shingles before laying down the rest of the roof. These starters should overhang the eaves by a couple of inches to allow for proper water runoff. Moreover, the alignment of these shingles should be straight as they will dictate the alignment for the rest of the shingles.

Nail Placement

Shingle tabs are connected to each other at the “common area,” a double-layer of shingles that extend down to the exposure. This common area is where the shingles must be nailed. One sign of an experienced roofer is proper nailing of the tabs on the common area. If your hired pros fasten the shingles with evenly spaced nails, you know you’re getting top-quality installation service.

Brand-New Flashing

Flashing failures are one of the most common reasons for needing premature roof repair on any newly installed roofs. Unscrupulous roofers often cut corners by reusing old flashing on a new roof. This is a bad habit and a telltale sign of poor workmanship. Always make sure your contractor uses new flashing strips to protect your new roof.
