Dealing With Blistered Asphalt Shingles

July 28, 2020 by Jesse Curry

To ensure that your roof is well-built and sturdy, regular maintenance carried out by reliable roofers is needed. A professional maintenance check can extend your roof’s life span and save more money later on by spotting minor damages such as blistering shingles and fixing them before they worsen.

How Blistering Shingles Form

Blistering asphalt shingles is not exactly uncommon. Moisture would get trapped in the shingles during the manufacturing process, evaporating when heated up by sunlight and forming blisters. Depending on the amount of damage, it’s usually not as bad as it looks, so long as the asphalt granules are still intact. It doesn’t usually affect asphalt shingle lifespan, but you may need to take it more seriously when the blisters start to pop.

When they pop, shingle granules become dislodged, leaving asphalt shingles unprotected from the UV rays of the sun. To avoid this, it’s recommended that you have the affected shingles replaced by trusted roofers immediately. If left unaddressed, the blistered areas will slowly lose more granules, which further affects their ability to protect your roof. This will lead to water leaks and internal roofing damage, compromising your roof’s ability to protect your home.

Repairing and Preventing Blistering Shingles

If your blistering shingles are still minor, avoid walking over them as they can easily pop when they’re under foot traffic. Falling debris such as small branches and acorns from nearby trees can also pop blistered shingles, so make sure they’re cleared from your roof. These precautions can stop the problem from becoming worse, but doesn’t exactly solve it since the affected shingles are still in place. Natural causes like hail storms are also likely to pop the blistered shingles.

When you need to replace your blistered shingles, our team of roofers can get the job done professionally. Call Roofing by Curry today at 941-270-4770 to get started! You can also reach us via our convenient online form. We serve Sarasota and the surrounding FL areas.
