5 Maintenance Tips for Metal Roofing

November 12, 2020 by Jesse Curry

Metal is a popular roofing choice for homeowners because it is highly durable and architecturally pleasing, and requires minimal maintenance. It is important to take necessary steps in order to keep your metal roofing as sturdy as possible for many decades to come. One of the leading roofing contractors in Florida shares some helpful tips below:

metal roofing, maintenance

  1. Do not let debris accumulate on the roof. There are some roofing systems that will allow debris to build up on the roof surface, leaving scratches and unsightly marks on some kinds of finishes. Routinely maintain your roof by sweeping away leaves and debris with a window cleaning brush. Be wary of using pressure washers as they can bring more damage than good.

  2. Clean your gutters. Gutters are a part of your roofing system. An aluminum roof is designed to effectively shed rain and snow. However, if there is damp debris sitting in your gutters, corners of your metal roofing may not dry, leading to rust and corrosion.

  3. Fix fasteners. Schedule a seasonal inspection with a professional roofer to determine if there are any loose or dislodged fasteners in the roof. Reliable roof companies know how to expertly tighten or replace them with the same material as the roof.

  4. Check sealants. Over time, sealant on seams and edges may need to be touched up or replaced. Do not forget to check sealants after a storm or snow event. Rust is a telltale sign of sealant or coating failure.

  5. Trim large, overhanging tree branches. Do not let trees rub against your metal roof since it can cause damage to the finish. The surface can be dented or abraded, compromising the fasteners. This often happens when there are strong, high winds over a long period of time.
