4 Basic Roofing Terms Explained by Expert Sarasota Roofers

December 11, 2014 by Jesse Curry

As your roofers in Sarasota and the surrounding areas, we at Roofing by Curry want to help you better understand the components of your roof. The more you know about your roof, the better you can take care of it. Understanding different roofing terms will also be helpful the next time you have a roofing professional conduct an inspection. In particular, here are some terms you need to know:

Underlayment

Roof underlayment is found underneath your shingles and shakes. It serves as a second skin of your roof as it is supposed to draw all kinds of moisture away from the roof foundations, flashings, and panels and back to the roof exterior. The underlayment is also responsible for the reduction of possible condensation under the roof panel.

Gutters

Your gutters are found on the edge of the roof as they are supposed to direct rainwater and debris from the roof to the ground, through the pipes and downspouts. Having this function, the gutters protect your walls and even the roof itself from different kinds of water damage. They can also protect your landscape from soil erosion.

Soffit

The soffit is one of most discussed parts of the roof. This term in French term means “formed as a ceiling.” If you’re going to look for it, look up at the eaves or edges of your roof. The soffit is the part of the overhanging section of the eaves that you can easily see. You may also notice that your soffit has holes. These holes are important as they actually aid your home’s ventilation system. They serve as a way for directing heat and moisture away from the home.

Fascia

The fascia is also one of the most common roof parts. Fascia boards are located at the edge of rafters, particularly the area where the gutters are installed. These boards are important as they protect the edge of the roof from the different elements of nature, especially from water damage. They also hold an aesthetic purpose as they can give off a sleeker look for your roof.

As the most trusted roofers in Sarasota FL, we at Roofing by Curry are here to help you with your roofing concerns. Call us today for more information.
